Sturgis Water Treatment

Ken Herceg & Associates, Inc. designed, inspected, and administered the installation of a half-mile of very special water pipe designed to transport contaminated ground water through city streets to a treatment plant. The pipe is a double-walled, welded one-piece seamless HDPE pipe. The pipe withstood over pressurization of two to three times the intended pressure during testing without failure. The space between the pipes contains a leak detection tape system, and is monitored for both moisture and pressure variations to quickly detect pipe failures. Monitoring stations along the route, (pictured above) met the client’s requirement to allow televising the entire length of the internal pipe.

Above ground improvements included repairs to city streets, sidewalks, and sewers along the way. The completed project provides both the means to safely transport contaminated water, and a dramatic improvement to the neighborhoods along the route. Our full-time project representative was also responsible for the construction of a well building, blower building, and the treatment plant itself.

Project Location: Sturgis, Michigan
Construction Cost: $1,300,000
