Ken Herceg & Associates, Inc. provided design engineering services for the Indiana Toll Road Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation on I-80 / 90 from mile post 15.5 to mile post 18.7. This project included the complete reconstruction of a portion of the Toll Road and the addition of travel lanes. Our team redesigned the road and specified phases during construction so that three lanes were open at all times. We utilized innovative ideas to include a “swing gate” traffic control system, which served to reverse the center lane traffic flows during peak directional flows. Extra lanes were open going into Chicago during the morning hours just as extra lanes were open leaving Chicago during the afternoon hours. Other technological design ideas included the use of a pedestal pre-fabricated bridge with high skew in combination with Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls.
