Indiana Avenue Bridge over Elkhart River

The Indiana Avenue Bridge is a new structure that replaces a bridge built in the 1930’s. This structure over the Elkhart River is 203 feet long and is constructed of concrete. It has prestressed concrete “I” beams placed on concrete “hammerhead” piers. A unique feature, an anti-icing system has been installed to keep ice and snow off the bridge deck during the winter months. The system is fully automatic and is the first of its kind in the State of Indiana. In addition to the bridge, the project also consisted of a Bike-Pedestrian tunnel under Indiana Avenue at the West end of the bridge. This tunnel allows bicycles and pedestrians to pass underneath. The completion of this structure has aided in attracting and increasing visitors to the downtown area.

Project Location: Elkhart, Indiana
Total Project Cost: $1,600,000
