| St. Joseph County 1896 Courthouse Security Entrance Addition |
|---|
|
The security of courthouses has been increased in recent years, and many historic facilities are solving the transition by the addition of a security pavilion. In 1996, Ken Herceg & Associates was retained by St. Joseph County to add a security entrance to the 1896 Courthouse. The pavilion provides protection from the elements to visitors while they wait to proceed through security screening. Also, the building’s design integrity was kept by using the same triangular roof angle as well as following the vertical and horizontal glazing lines. The added entrance blends into the facade when viewed from the front. We also increased pedestrian ease of movement by utilizing two side doors as opposed to one front. By installing a planter and removing a section of stairs, the entrance holds a bit more green space and creates a pleasing entrance to the courthouse. Project Location: South Bend, Indiana |
