St. Joseph County 1855 Courthouse Restoration

This project was divided into two phases. Phase I included the restoration of the roof to match the appearance of the original tin roof and the cupola, which received extensive restoration including reconstruction of the original 1855 clock. Restoration stopped water penetration, which was causing extensive deterioration to the heavy timber roof structure.

Phase II included the restoration of the interior and exterior of the Courthouse and an addition to the rear of the building. The interior renovation included restoration of the second floor courtroom to an 1879 period while the first floor courtroom was restored to the original 1855 condition. The interior work included restoration of intricate woodwork as well as restoration of a historic mural and trompe l’oeil ceiling. Also, a new secure and accessible public entrance provides handicap accessibility to restrooms and access between floors while protecting the historical features of the original building.

Project Location: South Bend, Indiana
Restoration Cost: $4,700,000
